The Granite State, so called for its abundance of granite formations and quarries, was the first colony to establish a government apart from British authority. Its government was formed in 1776, and on June 21st, 1788, New Hampshire became the 9th state in the Union upon ratifying the U.S. Constitution.

New Hampshire has been home to a plentitude of influential Americans, including Robert Frost, Alan Shepherd, Dean Kamen, Seth Meyers, the McDonalds, and former President Franklin Pierce.
