The "Come and take it" slogan in American military history came about during the American Revolutionary War when Colonel McIntosh refused to surrender Fort Morris in Georgia to British Colonel Fuser by penning the phrase, "... if you want it, come and take it!"

The cannon was later added during the Texas Revolution against Mexico when revolutionists mockingly refused to return a cannon to Mexican forces ahead of the Battle of Gonzales.
