Exploring the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum

The Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum, located in Yorba Linda, California, is a comprehensive repository dedicated to the life, career, and legacy of the 37th President of the United States, Richard Milhous Nixon.

Historical Background

The library opened on July 19, 1990, and was originally operated privately by the Richard Nixon Foundation. It became a federal facility in 2007 when it was integrated into the National Archives and Records Administration system. This transition brought added transparency, accessibility, and credibility to its historical holdings. Those holdings include declassified documents, audio recordings, and artifacts from Nixon’s presidency.

The Facility and Grounds

The library is situated on a 9-acre campus. Nixon’s boyhood home is included on the campus along with a reflecting pool surrounded by beautiful gardens.

The boyhood home, a modest farmhouse built by Nixon’s father in 1912, has been preserved to reflect the family’s humble beginnings. It is the final resting place of the president and his wife, Pat Nixon.

The museum underwent a major renovation in 2016 wherein its exhibits were modernized and its interactive elements were updated and enhanced. Visitors can explore the history of Nixon’s presidency, from his groundbreaking trips to China and the Soviet Union to his domestic policies like the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
