Putting the Spotlight on Old Glory
Can I Fly My American Flag 24/7?
Yes. However, out of respect, the American flag should be illuminated at night.
The United States Flag Code states:
"It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during hours of darkness."
It is not considered disrespectful to fly all weather flags in inclement weather, but you may want to avoid this practice in order to preserve the life of the flag. Today, synthetic fabrics such as nylon and polyester are considered "all weather" fabrics.
We suggest lights mounted away from the flagpole, spotlighting the flag, for proper, patriotic illumination.
