Will the U.S. be all-American?

Proud to be Made in the U.S.A.

On July 1st, 2015, Florida passed House Bill 225 which requires all United States flags and Florida State flags purchased for public use by the state, or its counties and municipalities to be 100% American made. Florida is the fourth state to enact such measures to ensure that the American flags flown over their institutions be made from products and materials sourced right here in the United States.

The steady progression

In 2006, New Jersey pursued similar legislation, followed by Pennsylvania in 2007. Also in 2007, Minnesota enacted a law requiring all American flags sold in the state to be U.S. made. Arizona requires all public schools from sixth grade and higher — including public colleges — to display an American made flag in each classroom. Massachusetts also requires all public school flags to be American made, and Tennessee passed a law similar to Florida’s, where all U.S. and Tennessee state flags must be purchased under a state contract to be manufactured in the U.S.

Will your state follow the trend?

The United States Senate passed the All-American Flag Act in 2013, requiring that all flags used by the Federal Government be made in the U.S.A. and the Department of Defense amended its purchasing policies in 2014 to reflect the spirit of this bill. Now all flags flying over military bases, ships, and the Pentagon are made in America.

Florida’s new law is the latest in a trend that is catching. American colors sourced by Americans, and flown with American Pride. Is your state next?

UPDATE

Since posting this article Oklahoma has joined the American-made movement! On Thursday, January 21, State Rep. Ken Walker introduced House Bill 2341 named The American Flag Act. HB 2341. The bill is designed to ensure that all American flags purchased with public funds be manufactured in the United States. Walker, a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, stated that it was important to him that the symbol of American freedom be ‘homegrown’ and that he suspects most Oklahomans feel the same way.
